About

Hi y’all! Bem vindos! I’m a Peace Corps volunteer in north-central Mozambique, teaching Physics at the secondary school in a small town here. Let me know if you have any questions about food, clothing, Mozambican history, life as a Peace Corps volunteer, or anything else you’d like to read about in a later blog post.

It should also be acknowledged that often times the depiction of Sub-Saharan Africa in popular media is that of poverty, and lack of infrastructure. While far too often, this depiction doesn’t ring true, Mozambique has the 7th lowest GDP per capita and is ranked 10th lowest in the world in the Human Development Index. That places Mozambique well within the bottom 20th percentile just within Africa for either of these statistics. Very often, what’s shared on this blog will conform to this view of a poor, underdeveloped country, but it should be emphasized that the stories and experiences shared represent the smallest sliver of a very diverse part of the world. Please always remember when reading this blog that what’s written here is just one person’s experiences in one small town in a very large country, within an even larger continent.
